A statement from the presidency says that this morning President
Goodluck Jonathan will formally inaugurate his National Committee on
Flood Relief and Rehabilitation..
Following the inauguration, President Jonathan will depart for an
inspection tour of some of the affected States. He will visit Kogi,
Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States in what the statement said
would be the first-phase of his tour.
He announced the National Committee yesterday as part of the
measures by the Federal Government to provide urgent succor and relief
to victims of the devastating floods sweeping across the country.
The committee has Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Mr. Olisa Agbakoba as
co-chairmen. It is charged with raising additional funds to support the
efforts by the government to provide adequate relief and post-impact
rehabilitation to persons and communities affected by the floods.
In his broadcast yesterday, President Jonathan announced the
donation” of N17.6bn to the affected States. In a country deeply buried
in corruption, it is unclear how many of the affected individuals and
communities will actually see a kobo of the money, or when.
About 147 people have so far died in the flooding, but many more are
missing, and several roads and properties have been washed away.
