Ikeja City Mall is a pretty mall located in the heart of Ikeja. That is where I work. Cool. This mall houses popular stores like HealthPlus Pharmacy, Shoprite, Twice As Nice, Office Everything, Casabella Beauty Store, Mango, Bheerhugz, DSTV and others.
You see, the escalator is built in the middle of the mall, taking shoppers up and down the floors smoothly. You would see people posing and taking pictures. Girls in groups, giggling and window shopping. Families hurrying to get to the Shoprite bread queue.
What then causes moments of Ooh and Aaahs- It is not only the expression of shoppers when they see their friends and cheating spouses. Did I say that? Scratch it. The giveaway is when you hear an additional 'Kpele' 'Ndo' or the easy one- 'Sorry o'
This happens when you see girls in silly heels trying to take the escalator. I mean, what's bad in taking the escalator in heels? Nothing!! But then it becomes another story when you do it with careless fashion! The escalator is no respector of status.
Case Study 1: I was going to pee when I saw this beautiful lady in high sandals. She was wearing a nice hair and I paused to wonder if it was from one of the shops here. This lady tested the moving case first as if checking the temperature of a village stream. She pauses briefly, looks behind her as if she'd forgotten a bag of grocery. Then she turns half way and quicky steps on the escalator. The result? A huge wombolombo sound! She wobbles feverishly, dropping her purse and sunglasses. She doesn't even look back to pick it. Someone does. She holds her head up high as if nothing happened. My toes curled in embarrasment. As swiftly as that happened,the little drama ended. And the buzz in the mall continues
Case Study 2: This one got me laughing out loudly on a Sunday afternoon but who cares!. A young man in sagging jeans and a funky shirt approached the escalator in the wrong direction and just jumped on. Everyone just couldn't fathom what made him do it. He did the most animated backward dance for one embarrassing minute before he was rescued by the mall security.
I could go on and on with this scenes..but in all the laughter surrounding this words, do not fail to discover the rule of observation. Learn by watching the next person. Ask questions..even silly ones. Then you would be safe..and a wee bit more wiser.
